Narrative Workshop (Andrew Goodwin)

'Music videos are simply an extension of the lyrics' - Andrew Goodwin

How could you prove/disprove this?
Plenty of music videos out there further on the lyrics and use them as a basic outline to follow in the music video as to allow people to understand the preferred reading of the lyrics easier. Some songs as well take on the lyrics and almost take them into a film like structure. However there are still a lot of music videos that don't really follow the lyrics and just use the music videos to have fun or to show off the band/artist feelings or lifestyle.

What does it mean?
The quote means that music videos extend on the lyrics by using the video as a visual representation of the lyrics and shows several of the meanings the lyrics can use. The meanings of the lyrics can be taken in literal or metaphorical way this extends the song and shows a different meaning.

What is the main idea behind this ?

How significant is this ?
Lyrics are subjective as people view and read them in many different ways resulting in different meaning, music videos aim to try explain the lyrics in the way the band or artists want it to be shown but this doesn't always mean taking the literal approach and creating a story from the lyrics. This makes the quote dependent on the artist or genre as different genres take on music videos in different ways for example pop songs tend to show more of a story or emotions of the song and rock songs tend to go for the more fun or videoing there gig side of thing.

What evidence can you already present for this?
Different artists take different approaches when creating music videos some go for the more unusual fun way and some go for the more story themed way

Do you agree with this?
