Research into a genre- Task 7
What i've learnt:
I've learnt about how alternative rock came from and a look at some of the top bands in the genre nd how they differ so much from each other.
As I know many bands in this genre i't gives me a lot of ideas of what song I want to choose to do my music video on and also gives me a good look into what different videos in this genre look like which will help.

Research Into An Artist-Task 5
-What I've learnt from looking into a band.
- Some things I've learnt from looking into Mayday Parade is that not all music videos contain the band there are some exceptions which might be something to think about in the planning stage.
-A lot of their style consists around black and white.
-Most of their songs are more emotional and the music videos reflect on this as they tend to take on a more emotional and relatable style.

A detailed look into the shots lighting and placement of the band members in Tonight Alive's song some things I didn't or couldn't include was the face paced cutting in time to the music and the amount of short pans or tilt movements which where hard to spot.
By looking at a music video in this much detail I can start to understand how music videos are made and how the quick cut to a different shot can just be the same one to a slightly different placement or angle which will be something to keep in mind when constructing my music video.
Another thing I noted was the appearance of the singer Jenna compared to any other band member which is something I've noticed when looking at other music videos I just didn't release the frequency of the shots.
Something else was the really unclear and almost non appearing narrative which I took as the shots of Jenna in the cage which will be something else to keep in mind.

I chose to look at Mayday Parades song Kids In Love as it is a completely narrative based video following a group of kids on their tour around the U.S. From looking at a completely narrative based video compared to a mostly artist shot one from Tonight Alive I gained an understanding of how bands in the same genre can differ so much.
Most of the shots in this video were highly varied though there where a lot of two-shot, close ups, and extreme long shots, which will be something to keep in mind when I do my music video the variety of shots.
I also noted a wide use of pan and tracking shots in the video which will be something to keep in mind if I use any group or couple shots in my video the second being more likely because it would be good to include an example of a technique i've found in a music video as it shows convention.

Looking at A Day To Remember's Have Faith In Me which has a mixture of performance and narrative shot gives the rough idea of what a conventional music video in this genre looks like. I noticed that there are a lot more performance shots than of the narrative and that the narrative shots seem to appear in little blocks through out the song.
The performance shots consist mostly of the singer and of the guitarist, the bassist and the drummer don't appear nearly as often as these two.
I noticed again a large amount of extreme close ups of the instruments leading to a tilt up to a mid-shot or the other way round which will be something to keep in mind when I do my music video.
Something to do with the narrative that I noticed is that it becomes more unexplained as the video goes on that you think its going in one direction and it goes in a completely different one which is soemthing I may consider in when creating my music video.

From looking at these different companies I've come to the conclusion that I will either use an independent label such as Hopeless Records which has no influence from the top 3 companies and only cares about it's artist over it's popularity or I will create my own independent record label.

Conventions of a Music Video- Task 2
What I've learnt:
By looking at the conventions form several music videos from the genre I've learnt the conventions that appear most often such as close-ups, mid-shots and the locations which are used and also the conventions that rarely appear such as a title text or cartoon bits that show a transition form one scene to another like; Bulls in the Bronx by Pierce The Veil.
I've started thinking of the conventions I want to use in my music video and whether I want to use the traditional conventions that appear alot or the more rarer conventions that appear every so often in music videos.

History of Music Video- Task 1
1980's
Music videos in the 1980's showed mostly narrative shot with the occasionally shot of the singer. The shots generally weren't that fast paced and the editing was very obvious this with the shot sliding from black to show another on several occasions. The editing was usually fairly random and didn't always cut to the music. The shots were also fairly long only occasionally changing angle or placing.
1990's
Music videos in the 1990's showed a lot more variation of shots there were a lot more angles and range of shots. There was also a decent amount of both narrative and shots of the band. Unlike the 1980's shots of the rest of the band have more occurrence. The editing is a lot smoother and less noticeable and the shots are cut in time with the music. The mise en scene is thought about a lot more such as lighting, costume and locations compared to the 1980's and are used to show off the genre of the music more.
2000's and onwards
This is where the more modern music video techniques come in as this is where recording labels spend a lot more time and money on music videos. Music videos which are all cartoon or anime style appear more often as there are a lot more programs companies can use. There are also a lot more camera techniques and angles used to give a variety of shots such as over the shoulder shots and close up shots become more used.
The editing is now at a level where you can hardly see the cuts unless it is intended and the cuts tend to be a lot more faced paced changing to different shots or angles of the same shot to give variety to the music video to make it more interesting.
What I have learnt:
I've seen how music videos have changed over time and how the conventions have changed I've also learned about the most inspirational music videos in the overall rock genre such as 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' or more recently 'I Write Sins Not Tragedies'
